Event Details
LGBT Great, in partnership with Schroders, is delighted to invite you to a dynamic theatre-style discussion to explore:
(1) the experience of being a parent to an LGBT+ child
(2) what organisations can do to support parents
(3) the 'myths'
A 2022 survey by the Trevor Project found that 45% of LGBTQ+ youth seriously considered suicide in the past year, while fewer than 1 in three trans and non-binary youth found their home to be gender-affirming. The reality is that LGBT+ youth are a highly vulnerable and often poorly understood group.
Parents play a significant role in their children's lives in myriad ways. Understandably, many parents will lack an appreciation and understanding of what it means to be an LGBT+ person figuring out their identity. In this formative time for their children, the actions and influence of parents and adults around them have the potential to help, affirm and empower, but also to harm, discourage and oppress.
Core Event Learning Objectives:
- Explore the issues affecting parents of young LGBT+ people.
- Build foundational knowledge of different identities.
- How to support parents with practical and real-world tips/examples.
- Organisational best practices around parenting networks.
LGBT Great and Schroders are planning for a photographer and videographer to be in attendance at the event. If you do not feel comfortable featuring in any of the photos or filming, please do bring this to our attention by emailing lauren@lgbtgreat.com
