LGBT Great, in partnership with our Corporate Members, invite you to our International Lesbian Day conversation. We will be exploring the latest research data on LGBT+ women across the globe and also explore the evolving terms, queer, lesbian and gay women.
What?
- International Lesbian Day is an annual day to celebrate and bring visibility to lesbians in the LGBT+ community.
- The Intersection of LGBTQ+ and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, (and) People of Colour) Identities.
- The purpose of the date is to celebrate and shine a light on the diversity of lesbians internationally.
- The important date is recognised globally on 8th October to coordinate international events to increased awareness lesbian culture.
- Whilst the very foundation of International Lesbian Day is uncertain, it is widely believed that it began in Australia and New Zealand in 1980 when a Lesbian Day March was held in New Zealand.
- The first Australian event was held at the Collingwood Town Hall in Melbourne on October 13, 1990.
- International Lesbian Day is all-inclusive. It's a day to be shared by lesbians and allies of lesbian rights.
Why?
- Lesbian women are typically less visible within workplace LGBT+ networks overall.
- The intersections of gender, sexual orientation and others such as race, mean that lesbian women are much less represented within our industry.
- There are very few visible lesbian women overall and there are almost none who are 'out' at executive leadership or c-suite level.
- The lack of visibility acts as a barrier to attracting more lesbian talent to our industry and in our existing talent feeling able to be 'out' within the workplace.
