5 LGBTQ+ Reports from 2023
1. ILGA report finds that the European LGBTQ+ community faces increasingly toxic and violent environment
1. ILGA report finds that the European LGBTQ+ community faces increasingly toxic and violent environment
On 20 February 2023, ILGA released its annual report which benchmarks 49 countries across Europe on the strength of their LGBTQ+ legal and policy situation. The ILGA noted the steepest rise in anti-LGBTQ+ violence since reporting began, with a key area being the 'enormous backlash' that the trans community continues to face across represented countries.
_____
Our View: LGBT Great's previous digests have covered the alarming wave of anti-trans rhetoric and legislative changes that have swept across certain European nations, including Russia, Hungary, Italy, and Turkey, resulting in the further erosion of crucial protections for the trans and non-binary community.

However, we did note positive strides being made across Spain, Finland, and Malta in particular. This variation, both in terms of baseline legislative protections and progress trajectory for countries, poses challenges at the organisational and the international level.
2. Out Leadership report highlights dramatic increase in LGBTQ+ supportive companies in Nasdaq
2. Out Leadership report highlights dramatic increase in LGBTQ+ supportive companies in Nasdaq
On 19 April 2023, Out Leadership released a report which found that the number of companies trading on the Nasdaq stock market that have adopted LGBTQ+ supportive policies increased 1556% throughout the 2022/2023 financial year. In absolute numbers, there were 113 companies in 2022 with such policies. In 2023, there are 1871.
_____
Our View: This significant jump reflects (1) the tangible action that executives are already taking in making DE&I a key priority and (2) that the industry as a whole is experiencing a gradual move in the right direction.

We see this report as reflecting the real progress being made in LGBTQ+ equality across Nasdaq companies.
3. Study conducted by Birmingham City University finds UK LGBTQ+ journalists face disproportionate amounts of abuse
3. Study conducted by Birmingham City University finds UK LGBTQ+ journalists face disproportionate amounts of abuse
A new study released by Birmingham City University, which surveyed 40 LGBTQ+ journalists in the UK, has found that 86% of respondents have experienced abuse and harassment due to being LGBTQ+. In contrast, 78% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that it is becoming increasingly challenging to be an LGBTQ+ journalist in the UK.
_____
Our View: 58% of the respondents also said that their employers did not recognise the specific risks faced due to their LGBTQ+ identity, reiterating the importance of an intersectionally sensitive lens in understanding privilege and power. 4. The Trevor Project report highlights poor mental health for American LGBTQ+ youth
4. The Trevor Project report highlights poor mental health for American LGBTQ+ youth
On 4 May 2023, The Trevor Project released a report which surveyed 28,000 respondents between ages 13 and 24. The report highlights that 56% of the respondents were unable to access mental health care. Further, only half of trans and non-binary respondents found their schools to be gender-affirming.
_____
Our View: 1 in 3 LGBTQ+ respondents also said that their mental health was directly and negatively impact due to anti-LGBTQ+ legislations and policies.

With 474* anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced in the 2023 legislative session, these sobering findings come as no surprise. Mental health is crucial to every aspect of life, and it is disheartening to see LGBTQ+ youth suffer as a result of their identity.
5. LGBT Great report codifies the impact of role models
5. LGBT Great report codifies the impact of role models
On 8 February 2023, LGBT Great released its thought leadership report 'Seeing is Believing' sponsored by Citi, spanning 4 countries and 1,600 respondents. We explored (1) what it means to be a role model (2) the tangible impact that visible role models have on LGBTQ+ people and (3) the organisational imperatives for building a culture of storytelling around role models at all levels.
______
Our View: Our findings illustrate that there is a crucial element often forgotten in conceptualisations of role models, that of "affirmation". We found that for underrepresented communities having visible role mode had a material impact on their confidence and sense of self-worth and inclusion within a professional environment.

Pride represents a unique opportunity for organisations and leaders to build momentum internally around LGBTQ+ issues, voices and stories. For more information on how LGBT Great can support you throughout Pride month to achieve this, please reach out to alex@lgbtgreat.com
