Not sure whether you have the right "qualifications"? You're not alone! Research shows that women and members of other under-represented groups tend to not apply for roles when they think they may not meet every qualification, when in fact they often do. If you're an LGBTQ+ person or ally, and have taken action to further LGBTQ+ inclusion, we'd love to receive an application.

Outside of our cyclical recognition schemes, did you know anyone can apply to be part of Project 1000 Role Models and Allies? Don't be shy - submit your application !

Best wishes,

The LGBT Great Team

1. New report finds 1/3rd respondents looking for more inclusive employer
1. New report finds 1/3rd respondents looking for more inclusive employer
On 22 June 2023, a new report was released by Deloitte analysing LGBT+ inclusion at work, which surveyed 5,400 LGBT+ respondents across 13 countries and multiple sectors. It revealed that 1/3rd of the total respondents were looking for more inclusive employers. 72% of Gen Z, 64% of Millennials, and 43% of Gen X, also said that they actively sought out information about an organisation’s commitment to diversity and inclusion before applying to their current role.
_____
Our View: 6 in 10 respondents reported that it was important to be able to freely express their sexual orientation at work and 75% agreed with the same for gender identity.

This report showcases the importance of embedding LGBTQ+ inclusion into organisational culture as a foundational step and not merely as an add-on. Talent views this as a motivating factor in where they look to apply and we don't see this changing anytime soon.
2. Top Court in Japan rules restroom restrictions for trans folks to be illegal
2. Top Court in Japan rules restroom restrictions for trans folks to be illegal
On 11 July 2023, the Japanese supreme court unanimously decided that workplace bathroom restrictions on a trans woman working in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry were illegal, overturning a previous decision from a lower court. This ruling marks the first time the Japanese supreme court has decided on a case which involves LGBTQ+ employees in the workplace.
_____
Our View: In June, the national legislature of Japan also passed a bill which seeks to “promote understanding” and avoid “unfair discrimination.” of the LGBTQ+ community, another indicator that LGBTQ+ rights are being prioritised in the country.

These decisions follow the mounting international pressure on the nation to demonstrate progress on LGBTQ+ equality, with it being the only member of the G7 without any legal recognition of same-sex unions.
3. Survey finds 76% leaders comfortable in dealing with treatment complaints from transgender employees
3. Survey finds 76% leaders comfortable in dealing with treatment complaints from transgender employees
A recent survey conducted by Irwin Mitchell with n=2,049 participants who occupied leadership positions, revealed that 76% of them felt at ease handling treatment complaints from transgender employees, while 15% expressed discomfort in doing so. When focusing solely on those in a chairperson position, the percentage of individuals uncomfortable with handling such complaints doubled, reaching 33%.
_____
Our View: A recently released report by BCG found that 60% of the respondents from a n=2,230 sample of trans and gender non-conforming folks experienced more than 10 negative behaviours in the past year because of their gender identity.

With such a disproportionate amount of discrimination prevalent against the community in the workplace as envinced by these reports, it is crucial that all leaders are equipped and confident to handle transgender complaints at work. For some tips, peruse this guide attached provided for free by Irwin Mitchell.

4. Bid to block anti-LGBTQ+ bill rejected by Ghana’s Supreme Court
4. Bid to block anti-LGBTQ+ bill rejected by Ghana’s Supreme Court
On 19 July 2023, Ghana’s supreme court rejected a legal challenge seeking to block the passing of an anti-LGBTQ+ bill. The anti-LGBTQ+ bill which criminalises same-sex relations, transgender identities, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights has been debated by lawmakers since August 2021, with most MPs now reporting to be in favour.
_____
Our View: Ghana’s rich history of LGBTQ+ identities is being eroded due to imported homophobia and recent legislative regressions. For example, the Dagaaba people assigned gender not based on ones anatomy, but rather the energy one presents. The Fante people believed that those, of either sex, with “light souls” were attracted to men whereas those with “heavy souls” were attracted to women.

These are a few of the many examples of LGBTQ+ identities in pre-colonial Ghana.
5. New study finds 81% of US trans adults have thought about suicide
5. New study finds 81% of US trans adults have thought about suicide
A study released in July 2023 conducted by the UCLA School of Law utilising data from the U.S. Transgender Population Health Survey found that 81% of transgender adults have thought of suicide compared to 35% cisgender adults. Furthermore, 56% transgender adults have engaged in non-suicidal self-injury.
_____
Our view: The first half of 2023 in the US has been defined by relentless attacks on transgender rights, occurring in almost every state. As of 21 July 2023, 491 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced, with the majority targeting transgender youth protections.

The UCLA School of Law report highlights the dire consequences of an unyielding assault on a community’s validity, identity and their fundamental human rights.
