5 LGBTQ+ News Stories
1. Report shows 69% firms assign accountability for DE&I initiatives to senior leadership
1. Report shows 69% firms assign accountability for DE&I initiatives to senior leadership
A report released by the Investment Association in partnership with Thinking Ahead Institute showed that 69% of respondent firms assigned accountability for DE&I initiatives to senior leadership. Furthermore, 79% of respondent firms also said that the implementation of these initiatives was the responsibility of the HR departments.
_____
Our View:LGBT Great’s report titled ‘Seeing is Believing’ identified an engagement gap around LGBTQ+ DE&I specifically between senior leaders and employees with almost 1 in 2 respondents reporting a lack of visible engagement from senior leaders around LGBTQ+ issues in the workplace.

Bridging the findings of these two reports, we can recognise a discernible disconnect between employee sentiments regarding DE&I accountability, and the comparatively low levels of engagement from senior leadership in driving organisational DE&I efforts.

2. TGEU reports the death of 321 trans and gender-diverse folks in the last year
2. TGEU reports the death of 321 trans and gender-diverse folks in the last year
On 13 November 2023, TGEU (Transgender Europe) released its annual update of the Trans Murder Monitoring research project which reported the murder of 321 trans and gender-diverse people between 1 October 2022 and 30 September 2023. 94% victims were trans women or trans feminine people.
_____
Our View: In 2022, TGEU documented 327 murders, underscoring the disturbingly persistent pattern of hate crimes targeting transgender and gender-diverse people. These statistics stand as a stark reminder of the widespread anti-trans sentiment and violence prevailing in the world.

LGBT Great honours the memory of each life that has been lost to anti-trans violence, and envisions a world where all trans people are safe, empowered and celebrated.
3. Russia plans to ban ‘LGBT movement’ by labelling it as extremist
3. Russia plans to ban ‘LGBT movement’ by labelling it as extremist
On 17 November 2023, Russian officials confirmed that they had initiated legal proceedings to label the ‘international public LGBT movement’ as extremist and plan to criminalise all LGBTQ+-related activities in the country. The petition is to be heard on 30 November in the Russian Supreme Court.
_____
Our View: Russia's assault on the LGBTQ+ community commenced in 2013 with the implementation of an anti-LGBTQ+ law prohibiting the dissemination of 'gay propaganda' directed at children. In December 2022, Vladimir Putin extended the scope of this law, imposing penalties for the spread of 'LGBT propaganda' in all its forms.

Labelling the 'LGBT movement' as extremist would open the door to further persecution of people. If this bill is enacted into law, Russia would become increasingly unsafe for the LGBTQ+ community.
4. Thailand cabinet approves draft bill to legalise same-sex marriage
4. Thailand cabinet approves draft bill to legalise same-sex marriage
On 21 November 2023, the Prime Minister announced that the Thai Cabinet had approved a draft law on marriage equality which would be brought to parliament in December. The proposed amendment will change the words ‘men and women’ to individuals, and ‘husband and wife’ to ‘marriage partners’.
_____
Our View: Data shows that about 8% of the Thai population belong to the LGBTQ+ community. Historically, Thailand has been one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in Asia and has led the way for LGBTQ+ equality in the continent with same-sex relations being decriminalised as early as 1956.

If the same-sex marriage legislation passes, Thailand will become the second country in Asia after Taiwan to enact LGBTQ+ marriage equality.
5. Non-binary judge found dead in their home
5. Non-binary judge found dead in their home
On 20 November 2023, Jesús Ociel Baena, the first openly non-binary magistrate in Mexico, was found dead in their home with another person believed to be their partner. The authorities said Baena had received death threats before the incident because of their gender identity.
_____
Our View: : Baena was also one of the first people to receive a non-binary Mexican passport earlier in 2023. Their death comes at a time where trans and gender non-conforming folks are being persecuted relentlessly all over the globe, as evidenced in TGEU’s recently released report.
