1. Research shows DE&I training bolsters organisational culture and self-awareness |
| |
On 19 October 2023, a study published in the journal of Translational Behavioral Medicine found that participation in DE&I training led to desmonstrable changes in the awareness of cultural differences and the perceived importance of recognising biases and broader self-awareness. However, the study also recognised a lack consistent approaches as an inhibiting factor in understanding the impact of such training. _____ Our View: This meta-analysis adds to the growing body of literature exploring the impact of DE&I training as an important mechanism for creating a culture of inclusion and belonging. Interesting to note that the authors observed significant sector differences in terms of the penetration of DE&I training initiatives. The healthcare and education sectors, for example, came to the fore as having a high degree of saturation in DE&I training.

2. Government demands medical reports from trans foreign nationals to obtain GRC |
| On 6 December 2023, the British women and equalities minister, Kemi Badenoch, announced that trans foreign nationals applying for a gender recognition certificate ('GRC') from specific countries will have to provide medical reports to obtain the certificate, citing that some countries did not have ‘similarly rigorous systems as the UK’. _____ Our View: With this new announcement, the UK government has reiterated its stance on trans exclusion and has created an additional hurdle for trans foreigners to be legally recognised. This update comes in the wake of the the ILGA annual reporting cycle, which ranks 49 countries on LGBTQ+ rights and protections, saw the UK drop to #17 in 2023. In 2015, UK used to be #1.

3. Data shows concerning spike in arrests and prosecutions of LGBTQ+ people in 2023 |
| November was marked by the release of ILGA’s new report titled ‘Our Identities Under Arrest’ which found a spike in the number of arrests and prosecutions of LGBTQ+ people due to their identity in 2023. The report also rehighlighted an a signifcant and allarming underreporting rate around the world. _____ Our View: As 2023 comes to a close, 65 jurisdictions still criminalise same-sex relations and among them, 12 still consider capital punishment, 14 criminalise gender identity and/or expression of trans and non-binary people.

4. 68% of transgender and non-binary folks report covering an aspect of their identity in the workplace |
| On 14 November 2023, Deloitte’s DEI institute released a report titled ‘Uncovering Culture’ in partnership with the Meltzer center, which surveyed 1,269 US workers. It found that 68% trans and/or non-binary workers conceal their identity in some way in the workplace and 69% of non-heterosexual respondents reported doing the same with their sexuality. _____ Our View: Concerningly, 100% of the black LGBTQ+ people surveyed reported concealing some part of their identity in the workplace. Looking at this data from an intersectional lens, it is clear that different interacting elements of a person’s identity create different experiences and circumstances for them in the workplace.

5. Multiple gay venues raided following the passage of a bill labelling the ‘international LGBT movement’ extremist |
| On 30 November 2023, the supreme court passed a bill labelling the the ‘international LGBT movement’ as 'extremist' , following which multiple gay venues in the country were raided by the police. _____ Our View: : In the last digest, we anticipated a crackdown on LGBTQ+ people might be swift should the bill be passed and, alarmingly, this is exactly what has occured. Within a day of the supreme court passing the bill, the Russian police has already started targeting LGBTQ+ folks in the country, stifling their fundamental rights and freedom of expression.
