1. Research finds LGBTQ+ individuals are facing more financial barriers |
|
On 23 January 2024, Merril Wealth Management released a research report titled, ‘Diverse Viewpoints: Trends Reports’ which found that affluent members of the LGBTQ+ community in the US were facing increased financial barriers (86% in 2023 vs 46% in 2019) and more financial stress (94% in 2023 vs 79% in 2019). The report also highlighted increasing financial barriers for affluent Black/African American households in the US (76% in 2023 vs 65% in 2019). _____ Our View: The financial burden on marginalised communities continues to grow. This timely release coincides with February marking both Black History Month in the US and LGBTQ+ History Month in the UK, reminding us of the disproportionate struggles faced by both of these marginalised groups.
To learn more, attend our webinar on 29 February 2024, where we will be discussing excellence at the intersections of the Black and LGBTQ+ communities. |

2. Report finds NGO advocacy advances LGBTQ+ protections |
| A research report by the Arcus Foundation analysing trends in LGBTQ+ legislation between 2011 and 2020 found that NGO advocacy had a direct and positive impact on expanding LGBTQ+ protections. Each point increase in NGO advocacy resulted in an 11.1% rise in basic human rights protections for the LGBTQ+ community. _____ Our View: Another longitudinal study spanning 1990-2011, which evaluated 4,000 organisations, concluded that there was 'cross-national evidence for the success of NGO activism'.
In an organisational context, there often exists a hesitancy around being perceived to be overly 'activist', particularly during LGBTQ+ visibility days/periods like LGBTQ+ Pride month. However, the impact of effective collaboration between NGOs and high-impact corporates cannot be overstated.

3. Private hormone clinic for trans youth approved by England Health Regulator |
| _____ Our View: This clinic is the first of its kind in England to gain the CQC’s approval and tackles a pressing need for these services. This is clearly evidenced by the staggering numbers revealed through NHSE data in 2022 that 26,234 adults are currently waiting for their first appointment at an adult gender dysphoria clinic, with over 23,500 facing wait times exceeding 18 weeks.
By offering an additional avenue for healthcare, this initiative serves as a progressive step towards ensuring timely and accessible gender-affirming healthcare in England.

4. CDC data finds discrimination in housing and employment against trans women puts them at higher risk of contracting HIV |
| On 25 January 2024, CDC released new data through their Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, which found that anti-trans discrimination in housing and employment was preventing access to vital healthcare such as PrEP and gender-affirming treatment. This lack of access was linked with potential incarceration and violence which increased the risk of contracting HIV. _____ Our View: Another study conducted in the US found that 68% of transgender respondents of colour reported experiencing discrimination or mistreatment from a healthcare provider including care refusal, misgendering and verbal or physical abuse.

5. Nearly 75% LGBTQ+ Australians face abuse from parents or other authority figures’ |
| A new report summarising evidence from an 2021 ACMS survey was released by Respect Victoria which found that nearly 75% LGBTQ+ Australians faced abuse from their parents and other authority figures. The leading cause for maltreatment among Gen Z specifically was emotional abuse and exposure to domestic abuse. _____ Our View: Research suggests that the rates of underreporting abuse are somewhere between 60-80% in the LGBTQ+ community, a number disproportionally higher than their non-LGBTQ+ counterparts.
