1. Report finds 70% of LGBTQ+ people feel lonely, excluded or marginalised at work |
| On 03 June 2024, a new study by EduBirdie was published, which surveyed 2,000 LGBTQ+ employees. It found that 70% of the respondents felt lonely, excluded or marginalised at work, and 63% reported facing discrimination. _____ Our View: A 2024 mygwork study also found 60% of trans & non-binary employees had faced depression at some point in their life. Multiplesources of evidence are increasingly reporting disproportionate levels of discrimination and negative mental health outcomes for LGBTQ+ talent. It is incumbent upon us as a professional community to ensure that our workplaces are as inclusive and psychologically safe for LGBTQ+ people.

2. Thailand legalises same-sex marriage |
| On 18 June 2024, Thailand’s senate passed the marriage equality bill, legalising same-sex marriage. The bill passed with an overwhelming majority of 130-4 with 18 abstentions. _____ Our View: Polls conducted in 2022 and 2023 showed strong support for LGBTQ+ rights in Thailand, with 85% of respondents stating that they accepted LGBTQ+ relatives and 60% who reported supporting same-sex marriage.
This landmark decision has placed Thailand at the vanguard of same-sex marriage equality in Southeast Asia, and we hope it is succeeded by a domino effect in the region.

3. Morningstar launches LGBTQ+ inclusion index |
| Morningstar has announced the launch of an LGBTQ+ index that highlights corporate leaders in inclusion. The index targets 100 large- and mid-cap stocks diversified across regions and sectors by selecting companies with robust LGBTQ+ workforce policies and practices. _____ Our View: A 2023 Morgan Stanley report found that investors interested in advancing LGBTQ+ equity faced barriers, including a lack of investment opportunities (42%), limited research and data (32%), and not knowing where to begin (31%).
This commendable initiative by Morningstar will hopefully be crucial in closing these gaps and will empower investors to more consciously invest in organisations that prioritise LGBTQ+ inclusion. LGBT Great is proud to partner with Morningstar and applauds this trailblazing index.

4. Namibia high court overturns law banning gay sex |
| On 21 June 2024, the Namibian high court ruled that colonial-era laws criminalising same-sex relations were unconstitutional. The ruling declared crimes of “sodomy” and “unnatural sexual offences” as invalid under the constitution. _____ Our View: Reports and testimonials submitted to the UN Human Rights Committee and Amnesty International in past years have detailed distressing accounts of violent cyber-attacks and online harassment against LGBTQ+ Namibians.
By overturning this colonial-era law, Namibia has taken a step in the right direction, ensuring that LGB+ people can pursue a life without being persecuted.

5. New HBR research finds mentoring and diversity taskforces improve diverse representation |
|
HBR released new research that found mentoring programs, diversity taskforces, and the hiring of Chief Diversity Officers were some of the most efficient ways to increase managerial diversity in organisations. It also found job tests for managers and grievance procedures to be the least effective. _____ Our View: Increasing evidence points toward the importance of employing formal mechanisms in organisations that reframe the conversation of an inclusive culture as an imperative rather than just an appendage to a firm's functionality. This manifests in different reports showing the importance of DE&I in improving business outcomes.
On the flip side, our research has shown that 40% of Gen Z LGBTQ+ respondents do not believe FS leaders are effective allies, highlighting the young workforce’s perceived reality of industry inclusiveness. |
