5 LGBTQ+ News Stories
1. Report finds 64% of LGBTQ+ talent and 55% of allies more inclined to apply to LGBTQ+-assessed organisations
1. Report finds 64% of LGBTQ+ talent and 55% of allies more inclined to apply to LGBTQ+-assessed organisations
On 4 December 2024, we released a new piece of thought leadership uncovering trends on LGBTQ+ talent attraction and perception. We found that 64% of LGBTQ+ talent and 55% of allies were more inclined to apply to LGBTQ+-assessed organisations. More than 1 in 2 LGBTQ+ respondents also said they would leave their current employer for a more inclusive firm.
_____
Our View: Using this piece of research, we outlined 5 data-informed strategies that your organisation can employ to attract LGBTQ+ talent and allies effectively, thereby providing you with a competitive edge in hiring and retaining top-tier underrepresented talent. The first and most important step is getting your organisation LGBTQ+-assessed. To do so, contact info@lgbtgreat.com

Another key strategy to mitigate talent attraction hurdles is partnering with LGBTQ+-inclusive job boards like LGBT Great Careers. Contact lauren@lgbtgreat.com to know more on how you can get involved.
2. 33% increase in demand for safe housing from LGBTQ+ Britons
2. 33% increase in demand for safe housing from LGBTQ+ Britons
On 18 November 2024, Stonewall Housing, an LGBTQ+ charity that supports LGBTQ+ people who are homeless or at the risk of being so, found a 33% annual increase in LGBTQ+ people utilising the charity’s services. LGBTQ+ discrimination was also found to be the highest driver of homelessness with 27% reporting it to be the cause.
_____
Our View: This surge in demand for safe housing highlights the disproportionate challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community. Financial insecurity is a major contributing factor, with an HRC report finding that 48% of LGBTQ+ adults report being financially unwell, compared to 26% of the general public. Furthermore, a Stonewall report revealed that nearly one in five LGBTQ+ people have experienced homelessness at some point in their lives, with this figure rising to 25% for trans people.

These statistics paint a stark picture of the compounded challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community. Prejudice and stigma contribute to financial instability and discrimination, increasing the risk of homelessness. If you know someone in need of housing support, please reach out to organisations like Stonewall Housing.
3. Report finds stagnated DE&I progress in financial services
3. Report finds stagnated DE&I progress in financial services
A new research report published by Reboot on race equality in the financial services found that 62% respondents believed diversity efforts had stalled or declined in the last two years. 41% also said that more minority leaders in the industry would boost their loyalty.
_____
Our View: LGBT Great's research has also shown that underrepresented communities, look to role models for motivation, inspiration, and affirmation. Cultivating a workplace that embraces intersectional inclusion not only fosters a sense of belonging but also drives productivity and innovation.

As DE&I initiatives face increasing backlash, organisations have a critical opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to inclusion. By prioritising diversity at all levels with a particular focus in leadership, financial services firms can catalyse the attraction and retention of top-tier talent from under-represented groups, cultivate a more engaged workforce, and ultimately create a more inclusive culture where every employee belongs.
4. Slovenian court rules against legislation barring single and LGBTQ+ women from assisted reproduction
4. Slovenian court rules against legislation barring single and LGBTQ+ women from assisted reproduction
On 26 November 2024, the Slovenian Constitutional Court ruled the legislation which currently bars single women and LGBTQ+ women from accessing assisted reproductions methods as unconstitutional. The National Assembly needs to amend the law within a year.
_____
Our View: This petition to review this legislation was originally submitted in October 2020 and has now finally been deemed unconstitutional after four years of deliberation in relation to non-discriminatory treatment against women outlined in Article 14 and Article 55 of the Slovenian Constitution.

This long-awaited ruling marks a significant victory for women's rights and LGBTQ+ equality in Slovenia. By removing barriers to assisted reproduction, the Court has paved the way for greater autonomy and reproductive freedom for all women, regardless of their relationship status or sexual orientation.
5. Putin signs law banning Russian children’s adoption to nations where gender transition is legal
5. Putin signs law banning Russian children’s adoption to nations where gender transition is legal
On 23 November 2024, Kremlin’s leader Vladimir Putin signed a new bill into law banning the adoption of Russian children in countries where gender transitioning is legal.
_____
Our View: This legislation represents a further escalation in the Russian government's ongoing crackdown on LGBTQ+ rights. In 2022, the government passed an anti-LGBTQ+ law which banned "non-traditional sexual relations" and LGBTQ+ advocacy in the country. This increasingly hostile environment is reflected in public opinion, with a World Values Survey revealing that 71% of Russians do not believe homosexuality is "justifiable".

The interplay between discriminatory legislation and public opinion creates a vicious cycle, further marginalising and endangering LGBTQ+ Russians.
